Verizon takes another swing at AT&T, puts iPhone on the Island of Misfit Toys

November 8, 2009

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/gadgets/Verizon_takes_another_swing_at_AT_T_w_Misift_Toys_iPhone_Ad’; AT&T might be suing Verizon for misrepresenting its network in ads, but that doesn’t seem to have dissuaded Beg Red from using that same map image in this new spot, which casts the iPhone away to the Island of Misfit Toys. Hard to argue with the premise, but here’s the real question: why not just sack up use a real iPhone, instead of this KIRF piece? Check the ad after the break.

Update: Two more ads after the break — “Blue Christmas” and “Elves.” In case you were wondering, it’s a sunny 70 degrees in early November in New York and Chicago, which is just about perfect for Christmas ads.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Yamaha intros more affordable Tenori-On ‘Orange’

November 8, 2009

It’s been well over a year since we published our take on Yamaha‘s perplexing, beautiful and all-around intriguing Tenori-On concept, and evidently the masses have spoken out. This week, the company announced that it will soon be shipping a “more affordable” version with the name Tenori-On ‘Orange,’ with some vendors already leaking a £649 ($1,077) MSRP. Put simply, the new Orange version will retain all of the musical functionality that the original had (or has, as it were), but the magnesium casing will be replaced by a rugged plastic one and the battery / back panel LED options will also be removed in order to shave costs. Still, we’re all for peeling back on the flash in order to get more music makers into more hands, so we’ll certainly look to wrap our own paws around one when it starts shipping in December.

Leica X1 photo gallery proves that big shots do come in little packages

November 8, 2009

For those who’ve never really understood the mystique and allure surrounding Leica‘s retro-styled cameras (and their stratospheric price tags), here’s a gallery of shots that might just lend a little insight into the fixation. The outfit’s X1 was announced back in September, though initial shipments aren’t expected to begin across the pond until early 2010. That said, the shutterbugs over at dpreview managed to procure one ahead of time, and they’ve hosted up a cornucopia of sample images from the currently unpriced compact. Go on and give that read link a look if your interest in piqued — we’re guessing you’ll come away wishing your SD200 could produce similar results.

Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin mini iPod dock lands for a hands-on

November 8, 2009

We’ve seen plenty of carefully staged press shots of Bowers & Wilkins’ new Zeppelin mini iPod dock, but we’re guessing that anyone about to shell out $400 for one of these is going to want a considerably closer, more unvarnished look at it. Thankfully, the folks at iLounge have now stepped in and provided just that and, while the agree it’s certainly not for everyone, they do seem to think that those with the money to spend won’t be disappointed, noting that the Zeppelin mini is another great example of the “speaker as art.” Hit up the link below for a closer look, including a comparison with B&W’s full size Zeppelin.

DocuPen X hits earth for all your pen scanner needs

November 8, 2009
Thinking maybe you can’t live another day without finally breaking down and purchasing a pen scanner? We can sympathize. There are plenty on the market, but the newly hatched DocuPen X Series is mildly more interesting than most out there. They’ve managed to cram 64MB of memory, Bluetooth, a tiny OLED screen and a lithium ion battery all in that tiny package, and if you’re the sunflower seed-eating, alien-hunting type, you probably want one of these for scanning your files at up to 600 dots per inch. DocuPen’s teensy X Series scanners start at $370.

Revo’s retro-styled Heritage radio does DAB, WiFi and casual unboxings

November 8, 2009

It’s fair to say that Revo has never made a “normal” looking radio in its entire life, but hey — that’s a-okay with us. The outfit’s latest, which is up for pre-order right now at £229.95 ($382), is easily one of the sleekest, most vintage-looking we’ve ever seen it produce. The aptly-named Heritage sports a wood and aluminum motif, room for your iPod or iPhone to dock, and support for DAB, FM and WiFi radio signals. There’s also an OLED display to keep you informed, support for wireless music streaming from your Mac or PC, a 3-inch neodymium speaker driver, 7-watts of power, a 3.5 millimeter headphone connector and even an iPod video output. Heck, they even throw in a multi-country power adapter as a courtesy to you yearnin’ Yanks. Go on and tap that via link if you’re interested in an unboxing.

Creative’s ZEN X-Fi2 touchscreen PMP now on sale

November 8, 2009

Candidly speaking, we can’t honestly envision too many of you fine folks running out and purchasing one of Creative’s new ZEN X-Fi2 portable media players given the availability of such robust alternatives. That said, we’d be remiss of our duties if we didn’t point out that the PMP which shocked us at IFA is now on sale directly from Creative. $129.99 buys you an 8GB model, while $179.99 nets you 16GB and $229.99 provides 32GB. We know — that 3-inch LCD and integrated FM tuner look good from afar, but remember kids, it’s all about the UI.

[Thanks, Tyler]

Crapgadget: ‘All hope just might be lost’ edition

November 8, 2009

Tell us, readers — haven’t you dreamt deeply about shoving your hand into a toasty, moist hamburger at work in order to warm your digits without cranking the thermostat and irritating the Antarctica-born top brass? And tell us, haven’t you always wanted a USB hub that doubled as an airplane toy? And honestly, don’t even try to act like you’ve never longed for a fine-toothed comb that would stick out from your MacBook Pro whilst waiting at an airport. Amazingly, all of these radical fantasies can now be your own personal reality, as an unknown amount of faceless companies have inexplicably produced these very items and listed them for sale. Sure, the recession may be “over,” but “hope” is still a long, long way from being found.

Easy Piano bringing keys to the DS Lite in ‘early 2010′

November 8, 2009

We’ve got a sneaking suspicion that the DS Lite will be old ancient news by the time Easy Piano hit the market, but those who’ve learned to be content in life (and have somehow managed to resist the urge to snap up a DSi in place of their older handheld), have probably been hunting for this date. Valcon Games has just announced that its piano-teaching title (and the highly comical / interesting 13-key accessory) will be landing in North America in “early 2010,” but it didn’t go so far as to fess up to an MSRP. Not like it matters — you know you’re totally lining up to snag this during a midnight launch, regardless of how many heirlooms are forced onto Craigslist.
