Verizon Motorola Sholes not running MOTOBLUR?

October 6, 2009
We’d been hearing rumors that the Motorola Sholes on Verizon wouldn’t be running MOTOBLUR because it’s to be a “Google Experience” device, and while that seemed silly at first, it certainly looks like the device Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam was waving around this morning was running stock Android. How can we tell? For starters, Blur has a different 3G icon in the menu bar, and different icons for several apps — Calendar leaps out to us here. What’s more, that certainly appears to be the default Android search box lurking back there, something that’s not part of the Blur homescreen. That’s definitely odd, considering how big a bet Motorola seemed to be placing on Blur as its handset differentiator — and doubly odd since the HTC Hero Eric Schmidt was holding at the same photo op was running Sense on top of Android. We’ll have to see how this one shakes out when the Sholes is actually launched, but for now we’d say those rumors are looking awfully true.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXXXVII: PXP-2000 aspires to little more than playing NES games, a host of video formats

October 6, 2009

If we were tickled by how quickly the PSP Go was hacked, we must say that we’re surprised at how long it took for this bad boy to get KIRFed. And as most shanzai manufacturers do, they packed as many features into this portable as they could: 4.3-inch display (compared to the PSP Go’s 3.8-incher), all kinds of retro gaming support (including NES/Famicom, Gameboy / Gameboy Color, SNES, SFC), a camera of some sort, FM radio, microSD card slot (the device’s only form of storage), TV out, and generous video codes: RM, RMVB, AVI, WMV, ASF, MPG, MPEG, MPE, MP4, DAT, and MOV. Not exactly “aspirational” at $84, but we’ll take it nonetheless.

Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6.5 update guide: no, no, maybe

October 6, 2009

Alright, so it’s no secret that the upgrade path to Windows Mobile 6.5 is pretty limited, but Microsoft has nonetheless gone and laid thing out with another handy upgrade guide to avoid any confusion. The short of it is that those with Windows Mobile 5.0 or 6.0 devices are flat out of luck if they’re looking to upgrade to 6.5 (although they may be able to upgrade to 6.0 or 6.1), while users of Windows Mobile 6.1 devices (but not those aforementioned users that have just upgraded to 6.1) may be able to upgrade to 6.5 at some as yet unspecified point in the future. Right now, that latter group is confined to just eight phones (including the likes of the HTC Dash, Snap and Touch Pro2, and the Samsung Jack and Epix), but Microsoft says more devices may be added at a later date. Still confused? Then hit up the read link below for the complete breakdown, and try to forget about that whole Windows Mobile 7 thing for the time being.

[Thanks, Jammal]

Active Media debuts ‘seriously fast’ Aviator 312 USB 3.0 SSD

October 6, 2009

It may not be the first USB 3.0 hard drive, but Active Media’s new Aviator 312 external SSD does look to be the fastest one around at the moment– assuming it actually lives up to the company’s claims, that is. The biggest of those are read speeds “up to” a blazing 240MB/s and write speeds up to 160MB/s — both, of course, made possible through the magic of USB 3.0, which also just so happens to let the drive be an external one, and be powered solely by USB. Of course, there are a few not insignificant trade-offs as well, the most notable being that the drive is limited to just 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models, which also unsurprisingly demand more than their capacities would suggest: $89, $119, and $209, respectively.

Nobel Prize in Physics shared by CCD inventors, fiber optics pioneer

October 6, 2009

It’s not every year that the Nobel Prize in Physics falls within our scope of coverage, but this year turned out to a big exception, as the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has deemed it fit to recognize two breakthroughs in the fiber optics and digital photography. The first of those (and half of the $1.4 million prize) goes to Charles K. Kao, whose work in the mid-60s getting light to travel long distances through glass strands made the fiber optic cables we have today possible. The second half of the prize is divided between Canadian Willard S. Boyle and American George E. Smith, who both worked at Bell Labs in Murray Hill, New Jersey, and invented the so-called charge-coupled device semiconductor, better known to anyone that has ever looked at a digital camera spec list as a CCD.

PSP O Rly? Modder adds camera, custom firmware to Slim, films own infomercial

October 6, 2009

Very rarely are we rendered speechless by a mod, but we have just seen a video that seriously blew our minds. It seems that someone called JoblessPunk DESIGNS has managed to imbue a PSP Slim with dual nubs (more on that in the video below), a second USB port for charging, a camera, custom firmware (for emulators and the like), and switched out the UMD for 32GB flash memory. But that’s only the beginning: It seems that this gentleman is on a mission to single-handedly destroy the PSP Go by bringing his own vision of handheld gaming to the masses — and to help him do just that he’s put together one hell of an infomercial, complete with multiple camera angles, a vintage cable access set, and a truly mystifying soundtrack. See for yourself after the break. KK THANKS BYE

[Thanks, Robin]

HTC HD2 to arrive Stateside in early 2010 — huzzah!

October 6, 2009

Snap, looks like that painful feeling in our gut was just from that late-night Mickey’s sesh after all. HTC’s Peter Chou told SlashGear today that the monstrous, amazing HTC HD2 will be coming to the United States of America sometime in Q1 of 2010. That’s not too far off, but let’s be honest — it’s gonna be a long wait.

Second Verizon Android phone to be an HTC, Motorola Sholes makes an appearance

October 6, 2009

digg_url =’http://digg.com/hardware/Second_Verizon_Android_phone_to_be_the_HTC_Hero_Motorola_Sh’; Google and Verizon were awfully coy this morning regarding the upcoming Android devices that’ll be launching on Big Red over the next few weeks, but you know, that certainly looks like a Verizon-branded HTC Hero in Eric’s hand there, doesn’t it? And over on the right, well, that’s exactly what the Motorola Sholes looks like, isn’t it? Cat’s out of the bag, fellas — might as well push up those launch dates.

P.S.- This also jibes perfectly with that HTC Desire rumor from last month, but we’d bet almost anything the internals are the same as the Hero.

[Thanks, Berry]
