Danger’s server woes leave Sidekicks in the lurch

October 4, 2009

Look, Danger, we know that you’re hard at work on… ahem, “other things” right now, but can you please just take five and figure out what’s wrong with your servers? Sidekicks rely very, very heavily on the ability to phone home for even basic tasks — looking up contacts, browsing the web, you name it — and it seems that Danger’s data center has been on the fritz for a solid two days now with symptoms ranging from text message weirdness to dead address books and everything in between, up to and including a completely unusable experience. Frantic calls to T-Mobile are resulting in comped bills for some subscribers, so if you’re affected, you might want to give ‘em a ring.

AT&T Pure now on sale — with Windows Mobile 6.5

October 4, 2009

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/gadgets/AT_T_Pure_now_on_sale’; Well hey, look at that — AT&T’s riff on the HTC Touch Diamond2, the Pure, has quietly gone on sale, meaning Windows Mobile 6.5 just hit the world a couple days early. The glory won’t last long, though: the nicer Imagio is hitting Verizon on the 6th, and the Leo‘s looming. Still — WinMo 6.5 is here. Let’s get crazy.

Video: PSP Go hacked, says ‘hello world!’

October 4, 2009
As you’d expect, as soon as the PSP Go hit the shelves the homebrew community came out in force, looking to see which of its fave hacks and exploits might have made the trip from the original PSP to its UMD-less brethren. And here we are, with two videos posted by YouTube member Freeplay offering us tantalizing proof that indeed, at least one has. Of course, the whole thing is pretty rudimentary, the result of exploiting a known bug in an existing PSP game (which this particular hacker is remaining tight-lipped about rather than see Sony patch the thing). Karl B., who helped us to this one, provides a caveat: “It’s user-mode only, meaning no flash modification, no piracy, no advanced custom themes, no plug-ins — none of that.” All the same, it does our inner geek a sliver of hope, doesn’t it? Videos after the break.

Google AdSense leaks Apple’s refreshed iMac, Mac mini, Macbook?

October 4, 2009
This one is for all you online tea leaf readers and Apple SKU / crystal ball aficionados: Further confirming our suspicion that something more affordable may be on the horizon, Google AdSense this weekend started serving users in the Netherlands with ads for new iMacs, MacBooks, and Mac minis. Pointing to a dead link at the country’s Apple Store, the ads read (via Google Translate): “Apple’s Newest MacBook. Thinner, lighter and faster! Free delivery. Order today,” “The Brand new iMac. Ultra Thin 20 & 24 inch models. From only €1099 (roughly $1,603). Apple Store,” and “Apple’s New Mac mini. Faster and more affordable than ever. From only € 499 ($723). Order immediately.” (For a little perspective, that’s €100 ($145) less than the cheapest Mac mini currently on the Netherlands online store.) Granted, whenever peeping purported translations from foreign tipsters we’re always half-afraid that we’re actually reading Celine Dion lyrics or dialogue from Caddyshack, but this one seems to be the real deal — for whatever that’s worth.

Update: Apple’s “New Mighty Mouse” advertised as well.

[Thanks, Ronald V.]

Belling’s Media Chef digital cookbook

October 4, 2009

You know, back in our day, we would’ve imagined a digital cookbook being some virtual, possibly animated version of… you know, a book with recipes in it. These days kids and their fancy rock and roll cooking shows have taken over, and Belling’s new Media Chef digital cookbook — which looks like a glorified digital photo frame — actually houses 48 cooking instructional videos from chef Brian Turner for playback on its 8-inch screen. Brian can be harnessed with an included compact remote control, and the unit can also act as a general media player, calendar and photo frame. It retails for £170ish (about $271 US) but we’re not sure when.

Screen Grabs: Palm Pre stumps the experts on Numb3rs

October 4, 2009
Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today’s movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com.

The Palm Pre showed up on a recent episode of Numb3rs, and we can only assume that confused look on Charlie’s face is the simplistic calculator that ships stock with webOS. Or could it be something much more sinister?

[Thanks, Marshall]

250GB PS3 Slim spotted at retail in dapper gray box

October 4, 2009

The new 250 PS3 Slim might be listed “in stock” on Amazon.co.uk, but it’s not arriving until October 6th according to the online retailer. This particular model, however, is up for sale right this instant at some unnamed retail store in Europe — even though it’s hanging out behind a rather messy help desk in this particular shot. Either way, folks in Europe with a hankering for hard drive don’t have long to wait!

[Thanks, Alex S]

Gyrobike’s Gyrowheel stabilizes a kid’s first bike without the training wheels

October 4, 2009

Being the fine physical specimens that we are, even from an early age, we of course had little trouble learning how to ride a bike without external help, but we’re sure **some hapless child out there will welcome the Gyrowheel as salvation from the embarrassment of training wheels. The 12-inch wheel (a 16-inch version is in the works) replaces a standard front tire and has an adjustable-speed spinning disc inside, powered by a rechargeable battery. The idea is that you get the kid started on a high stability setting, and step them down until they’re not using the gyro at all. It goes on sale this December and should retail for around $100. Video of it in action is after the break.
