CyberPower announces new range of overclocked Core i5, i7-based gaming rigs

September 8, 2009

Not content with a pricey system powered by the latest and greatest Intel Core i5 or Core i7 processor? Then you’re just sort of madcap individual that CyberPower is looking for, as it has rolled out a new range of gaming rigs packing factory overclocked versions of said processors. That includes no less than five new models in Gamer Xtreme 1000 to 5000 series, which will be available with your choice of Core i5 750 (2.66GHz), i7 860 (2.80 GHz), or i7 870 (2.93 GHz) processors, and one of a number of different P55 chipset motherboards from manufacturers including Gigabyte, ASUS, EVGA, and MSI. Otherwise, you can expect some fairly high-end and fully configurable options across the board, and some equally high-end price tags for most of those options, although you can apparently get in on the base level for just $749.

T-Mobile BlackBerry Onyx press image leaks out

September 8, 2009

The BlackBerry Onyx hasn’t exactly kept itself a secret in the past few months, so it’s no surprise that we’re seeing what looks to be the official press image and release from T-Mobile well before the handset’s launch. No big surprises here, really — it’s still a 3G mashup of the Bold and the Curve 8900 with that new optical trackball — but apparently RIM’s preloading it with the Amazon MP3 store, so that’s slightly interesting. From what we can tell, it’s due in early November, but pricing is still a mystery — hopefully RIM and T-Mobile have saved the best surprise for last.

Sprint now offering $100 service credit to Pre buyers who port a number

September 8, 2009

We were expecting a Pre price cut today, but it looks like Sprint has slightly different plans — instead of lowering the outright price of the handset, the carrier is offering new Pre customers a $100 service credit if they port a number from a different carrier. Yeah, that’s a little odd — especially since the credit is spread out over three months, instead of applied all in one go. We’re guessing Sprint and Palm are just trying to lure new sales without having to openly cut prices on the Pre and undo its “premium” image, but as far as psychological marketing tricks go, parceling out a discount over 12 weeks might be the least effective one we can think of — we’re pretty sure most people would rather take a $100 price cut at the top end of the deal. Still, the end result is that the Pre is now $100 cheaper for switchers — anyone running out to buy one?

The Engadget Show is taping live this Sunday, September 13th — here’s how you join us

September 8, 2009

Well you’ve asked — and we’re answering. The Engadget Show gets underway this coming Sunday, September 13th, in New York City, and we want you to be a part of it! The show — which will be a mix of one-on-one interviews, roundtable discussions, short video segments, and live music — will take place at the Tishman Auditorium at Parsons The New School for Design. The Show will be filmed live once a month — but if you can’t make it, don’t worry. We’ll be bringing the full video back home to Engadget (as well as the iTunes Store, Zune Marketplace, etc.) for your viewing pleasure. The full show should be online just a few days after we tape!

The beautiful venue (which you can see in a photo after the break) is located at 66 W. 12th Street between 5th and 6th Aves. Seating is limited and tickets will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis — which means if you want to join us in the audience for the show, you’ll have to arrive early and be prepared for a little wait.

Here are the facts you need to know about the show:

  • The show is graciously sponsored by Nokia, and hosted by Parsons The New School for Design
  • Our first guest will be announced tomorrow — we’re pretty excited about it, and think you guys will be as well
  • Bit Shifter (one of our favorite chiptune artists) will be playing live at the first show!
  • The total show length will be around an hour

Here is what you need to know if you want to be part of the audience:

  • There is no admission fee — tickets are completely free
  • Tickets will be available for pickup at the Tishman Auditorium at 2PM on the 13th, and we’re strongly encouraging people to get their tickets and not stand in line — if you have a ticket, you’ll have a seat!
  • The show begins at 5PM, and doors will open at 4:30PM

If you’re a member of the media who wishes to attend, please contact us at: engadgetshowmedia@engadget.com, and we’ll try to accommodate you. All other non-media questions can be sent to: engadgetshow@engadget.com.

“3rd-Generation” iPod touch accessories appear on Best Buy’s website

September 8, 2009

At this point it would be bigger news if Apple didn’t announce new iPods tomorrow, but just in case you had some doubts, Best Buy’s gone ahead and posted up some listings for Belkin’s “3rd-Generation” iPod touch cases a little early. Sadly, there aren’t any pictures to be had, but hey — we’ve already seen a few of these cases in person, you know? They’re putting cameras in iPods, people. What happens next… is up to you.

Update: And hey — looks like there are some 5G iPod nano cases listed as well. Shocking!

Elliptic Labs returns with more red hot touchless UI action

September 8, 2009

Elliptic Labs is back on the scene with another demo of its touchless UI. This time ’round the company’s teamed up with Opera and presents us with a much more polished affair, not to mention a couple technical details. According to CEO Stian Aldrin, the device is based on ultrasound, tracks the hand itself (no reflector or sensor necessary), has a range of one foot, and has been designed to be either embedded in any electronic device (including a cellphone) or to connect to devices via USB. The company’s current demo shows the technology being used to flip through photos in an Opera widget. Sure, a couple simple one-gesture commands isn’t exactly “pulling all the stops,” as far as a proof-of-concept goes, but we’re looking forward to seeing what this company comes up with in the future. Peep for yourself after the break.

HTC Tattoo spotted on video, stripped of faceplates

September 8, 2009

Somebody’s tracked down HTC’s new Tattoo handset and managed to unceremoniously strip it off its faceplates on video, providing our first real look at the hardware “IRL.” It looks good, but not too good — certainly not out of the league of HTC’s other Android handsets. Sadly, the clip doesn’t show the phone in action, so if you were looking for usability fodder, you’ll have to look elsewhere. Vid is after the break.

Apple CFO says DVR, CableCARD not coming to Apple TV

September 8, 2009

Although Apple has always referred to the Apple TV as a “hobby,” there’s been a lot of speculation regarding the future of the box recently — it was first introduced nearly three years ago, and although the interface has since been upgraded, it’s still essentially the same product, leading to whispers that Apple was working on a new DVR-enabled model with CableCARD tuners that would replace your cable box. Awesome, right? Not so fast — according to analysts at Caris and Company, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer “pretty much killed” that idea when they asked him about it, saying it didn’t mesh with Apple’s business. Yeah, it’s sad, but it makes a lot of sense — Apple probably doesn’t want you to record for free what you can buy from the iTunes Store, and we can’t imagine anyone at Apple looking back at their experience with AT&T and deciding that partnering up with Comcast or Time Warner Cable was the next logical move. Still — doesn’t it seem like it’s time for something to happen with the Apple TV? Who know, maybe we’ll find out tomorrow.

Verizon rolls out Samsung Rogue and Intensity with order and predictability

September 8, 2009

We just heard a couple of weeks ago that Samsung’s Rogue and Intensity phones would be landing on Verizon sometime soon, and then we heard again that they’d be making their debut on September 8th and — wouldn’t you know it — they’ve now both made their debut on September 8th. The higher-end of two is the Rogue U960, which replaces the Samsung Glyde and packs the same slide-out QWERTY keypad as before, along with a 3.1-inch AMOLED resistive touchscreen, a 3 megapixel camera with LED flash, a microSD card slot and, of course, the usual TouchWiz interface. The Intensity U450, on the other hand, hangs onto the sliding QWERTY keyboard for easy texting but drops the touchscreen altogether, and keeps things fairly lightweight all around, including a 1.3 megapixel camera, and not so much as EV-DO for data. Of course, it also comes with an equally lightweight price (free on a two-year contract), while the Rogue will set you back $99.99 on the same contract.
