Android-based Archos gets pictured, briefly priced by B&H

September 1, 2009

We still gotta wait until September 15th for the whole scoop, but B&H has gone ahead and spoiled some of the mystery of Archos’ Android-based Archos 5, giving the internet tablet its own listing in a number of different storage capacity options, pictures in tow, as well as a $130 DVR station. Prices are currently listed as TBA, but fortunately it looks like the fine fellows at ArchosFans managed to capture the page when there were more concrete dollar signs on each model, to the tune of $294 for 16GB SSD, $370 for 32GB SSD, $320 for 160GB HDD, and $420 for a 500GB HDD. In the DVR station pic we spotted “HD” listed in the video names, which gives us hope that even more of those February leaks are coming to fruition. Screenshot of the with-price listings after the break.

Wii Internet Channel free from now on, the way it should be

September 1, 2009
Hey man, you don’t owe us an explanation. Times are tough, so maybe you just don’t have the 500 Wii points (that is, five bucks) to get in on the Wii Internet Channel, and you missed the free launch event way back in 2006. Well, you’re in for a treat: effective immediately, Wii owners can download the thing, free of charge, in perpetuity. And if you already shelled out the bones? Don’t worry — starting at the end of October, consumers who have previously exchanged 500 Wii Points to download the Internet Channel will get one NES game of their choice (of the same value) from Virtual Console. But that ain’t all — the Internet Channel has got a little upgrade in the form of Adobe Flash Lite 3.1, just the thing for all your YouTube needs. Hit the read link to get started.

Leaked Verizon docs point to October launch for Storm 2, Motorola Sholes, LG VX8575

September 1, 2009
This is all still firmly in the realm of rumors and speculation for the time being, but some purportedly legit internal Verizon documents obtained by BlackberryOS.com are offering a bit more fodder suggesting that the BlackBerry Storm 2 could be launching in October — or October 14th, specifically. The same documents also point to an October launch for Motorola’s Android-based Sholes smartphone, as well as a “mid-October” launch for LG’s vx8575 “Chocolate Touch” (which we assume is the same or a variant of the BL40 Chocolate Touch). All in all a pretty big month for Verizon — assuming everything actually pans out as rumored, of course.

Move over, Sholes: Verizon getting Android-powered ‘Desire’ from HTC?

September 1, 2009

A good, hard look at Verizon’s WinMo strategy tells you that the company isn’t loyal to a single brand when it comes to mobile platforms (and why should it be?), so we can’t say we’re terribly surprised to see a leaked inventory doc suggesting HTC wants in on Big Red’s Android action. All of the Verizon-focused Android talk as of late has focused on Motorola’s Sholes — but as Android goes, HTC’s still the Goliath to Moto’s David, so it would make a lot of sense that we’re seeing some action out of Taiwan here, especially in light of the fact that we’ve got the CDMA-flavored Hero coming up for Sprint. The screenshot leads us to believe that the model will be called “Desire” (now that we hear it, we’re surprised Samsung hasn’t snapped that up already) with a model number of 6200, sourced through the shadowy industry middlemen over at PCD. Beyond that, though, your guess is as good as ours.

Blu-Link universal remote for PS3 is your ticket to weight gain

September 1, 2009
Sick of all the physical effort involved in shuffling multiple remotes? Back in the day (that is, until yesterday) if you wanted to use a universal remote control with your PS3 you had to get some sort of IR-to-Bluetooth adapter, like the one available for the Logitech Harmony. SMK, however, is looking to change that (and reinforce your inertia in the process) with Blu-Link. This bad boy combines a Bluetooth PS3 controller with a standard infrared universal remote. Other features include advanced learning (for gleaning button assignments from your other remotes) and support for more than 400 brands of standard and HDTV televisions and flatscreens, 150 VCR brands, 200 Satellite Receiver models, 100 Cable TV Receiver brands, 50 DVR models and 200 home theater surround sound systems. Available September 1st for $49.95. HIt the read link for more info.

USB 3.0 logos now being handed out to certified wares

September 1, 2009

Aww suki suki now. With CES 2010 leaning around the corner and refusing to leave our periphery, we’re getting more and more evidence that the January trade show will be a launching pad for a new suite of USB products. Several months after the first USB 3.0 cables curiously went on sale, the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) has announced the availability of the USB 3.0 Compliance and Certification Program. What’s that mean? It means that a program is now firmly in place to provide compatible wares with a SuperSpeed USB logo, which in turn means that USB 3.0 gear is that much closer to retail shelves. So, who’s anxious to slap a USB 3.0 PCI expansion card into their shiny new PC?

Walmart expands Durabrand DVD player recall to 4.2 million

September 1, 2009

You know what they say about getting what you pay for? Well, the adage has turned out to be truer than normal in this case. Walmart, which sold some uber-cheap (like, $18 – $29 cheap) Durabrand DVD players in the US and the UK, recently issued a recall for 1.5 million of the units due to 12 reported cases of overheating. The malfunctions caused various degrees of property damage, but no injuries, and now, as a result of several more reported cases of the same issue, the recall has been upped to cover 4.2 million devices. The recall, which originally covered only the silver units sold, has now been expanded to cover both the pink and purple DVD players which were sold between January 2006 and July 2009 exclusively at Walmart stores in the US and Walmart-owned ASDA stores in the UK. Seriously, this just leaves us wondering: how many of these bad boys did they sell?

HP’s iPAQ K3 Obsidian gets FCC approval enroute to AT&T

September 1, 2009

Sure, we could beat around the bush and say, “well, the test report calls it an iPAQ and it’s got both GSM and HSPA on the 850 and 1900MHz bands, so it’s probably headed to AT&T” — but let’s cut to the chase for once, shall we? Despite much of the documentation still falling under confidentiality, HP’s latest phone has “AT&T SKU” written right on its publicly-available ID label, so that pretty much settles that. Interestingly, the documentation repeatedly refers to the new WinMo-powered handset as the “iPAQ KB1,” but we have every reason to believe this is the K3 Obsidian that’s been floating around for a while now. To be fair, we don’t know whether that’s a go-to-market name — nor do we know the price or launch date, for that matter — whatever it’s called, we can now take comfort in the knowledge that it’ll be 100 percent legal to use on American soil.

e-Detail’s dual-screen Prezenter gets Atom upgrade, becomes Averatec PT1400

September 1, 2009

Last we saw e-Detail’s dual-screen Prezenter tablet it packed an underpowered AMD Geode processor, a hefty $1,800 price tag, and no US release date to speak of. While it’s been well over a year now, it looks like most of those have now changed for the better, with the device apparently finding a new distributor and a few new upgrades. Now branded as the Averatec PT-1400 “Prezenter,” the device packs the same dual 14-inch and 7-inch touchscreens as before, but gets a more powerful Atom Z520 processor (upgradeable to a Z540), along with an 80GB hard drive (or optional SSD), 1GB of RAM, and 802.11n WiFi, among other standard specs. Unfortunately, there’s no word on a price just yet, but it will apparently go on sale in North America, Japan and Korea sometime this month, and be available in your choice of black or white. A slightly smaller 12-inch version is also apparently set to follow at a later, unspecified date.

Android Market re-imagined for Donut and beyond?

September 1, 2009

Android’s had a generally black-dominated UI theme since its initial launch — we’d even go so far to say that it’s become one of the platform’s trademarks — but is it all about to go away? A tipster to CNET has sent in a couple shots of what appears to be a totally revamped Market that has apparently made appearances both on Donut and on the allegedly Eclair-equipped Motorola Sholes, possibly portending a more wide-reaching interface shift to brighter, more colorful controls and elements. Outside of the facelift there’s no word on any actual new functionality here, so… you know, hang onto your G1 for dear life if you’re digging the dark Market.

[Thanks, z.kalach]
