Samsung P410M pocket projector hands-on

August 25, 2009

As we heard before, its 170 lumens is a bit brighter than the 151 lumens P400M predecessor, but otherwise the P410M is pretty much the same not-quite-pocket projector. The USB input is a nice touch, but the rep we spoke with didn’t know what codecs were supported at this point. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get a chance to see it in action, as the device suffered through some accident on the way to the event, but we did find out that it’s due out for public consumption next week for around $699. Pics for your perusal are just below.

Snow Leopard takes a bite out of support for legacy Palm OS devices

August 25, 2009

Still rocking that Palm Zire with your new Intel-based Mac? Then you might just want to reconsider that upgrade to Snow Leopard, as Apple has apparently decided to ditch its support for legacy Palm OS devices in the latest incarnation of iSync. That, as you may be aware, had previously acted as a conduit for Palm’s aging but still available Palm Desktop software, and let folks easily sync up their contacts and other data from their Centro, Treo, Zire, Tungsten, or even a venerable old PalmPilot. Of course, that doesn’t quite rise to the same level of controversy as the whole Pre / iTunes situation, especially considering that Palm itself has mostly moved on from said devices, and there are still some third-party sync solutions available for folks that want to keep the Palm OS dream alive.

Duo brings pen-based computing to almost any display

August 25, 2009
An intermediate step between Livescribe and a touchscreen, the Duo by KCI Communications lets you use a stylus on your standard desktop or laptop display. It works (on devices up to 17-inches) by using a base station to track the XY coordinates of the pen as it makes its way around the screen. If that weren’t enough, the pen also features functionality similar to Livescribe — you can keep notes on traditional paper and transfer them to your PC later. Currently, this bad boy is only available for WIndows machines, but Mac drivers are in the works. Now, we haven’t had the opportunity to play with one of these things, but maybe you’ll want to take the plunge? If so, hit the read link — shipping now for $119.95. But not before you check out the commercial after the break — it’s a classic.

Microsoft sucks at Photoshop

August 25, 2009

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/microsoft/Microsoft_sucks_at_Photoshop’;

Officially.

Update: Microsoft tells CNET, “We are looking into the details of this situation. We apologize and are in the process of pulling down the [Polish] image.”

Update 2: And… it’s down. The un-shopped image is now up on the Polish site, although whatever harried graphics monkey that got the call to fix it didn’t do so well lining up the text box. At least that’s one mistake that won’t get you fired though, right?

[Thanks, David and Matt W]

Engadget’s Kindle design contest: we have winners!

August 25, 2009

The votes are in, dear readers, and you’ve spoken loud and clear: from our original 23 finalists, your votes have boiled it down to five well-deserved winners who’ve clearly put time, effort, thought, determination, and old-fashioned elbow grease into their designs for gracing the metal back of Amazon’s 6-inch Kindle.

So what happens next? We’ll be working with winners and coordinating with the good folks at Adafruit Industries to turn these designs into reality thanks to some insanely high-powered precision lasers — picture that scene in Goldfinger where the film’s namesake tries to cut 007 in half to get an idea of just how high-powered we’re talking about here — and rest assured, we’ll be posting plenty of pictures as they come out of the workshop! Follow the break for the lucky five (presented in order with the most votes first).

A huge word of thanks to Amazon, Adafruit Industries, everyone who submitted entries, and the voters who figured out where these Kindles belong!

Microsoft’s CEDIA event September 9th to reveal what’s new in Media Center

August 25, 2009
CEDIA Expo

We had a good feeling that Microsoft might have a thing or two to announce around Windows 7 Media Center at the upcoming CEDIA show in Atlanta this September, but now we can start the official countdown. The after-hours event at ESPN Zone will help kick off the show in Atlanta at 6:30pm — the event is invite only, but don’t worry, we’ll be brining you the events live as they happen. Although the specific announcements are anyone’s guess, the invite did let us know that all of the Windows Media Center news and updates will break there, as well as the winner of the Ultimate Install Contest. So that’s just over two weeks until all your home media hopes will be fulfilled — or destroyed — depending on your perspective.

Sony’s Andrew House hints at more social networking for PS3

August 25, 2009
PlayStation Home not “social” enough for you? Fret not PS3 users (or soon-to-be PS3 users), ’cause Sony Computer Entertainment Europe head Andrew House has recently dropped a not so subtle hint that some more traditional social network features are on their way to the console. While he obviously didn’t get too specific, House did tell the Financial Times that Sony has plans for more social networking features, and apparently wouldn’t rule out a partnership with “popular sites such as Facebook,” much like Microsoft has already announced for the Xbox 360. In PS3 price-cut news, House also noted that Sony is indeed aware that “consumers are watching their euros and pounds more carefully than before,” but added that “it would not be fair to say this is a reaction to current market conditions.”

Motorola holding Android event on September 10, awesome new handsets in store?

August 25, 2009

Could this be it? Motorola’s heading out to San Francisco to host an Android-centric event early next month. We’re not being told what’s on the docket just yet, but if we had to guess, it’s probably some combination of the Morrison and Sholes that have leaked over the past few weeks. The invitation says “Save The Date,” but you know what we’re thinking: this is really “Save The Company.” Make or break, Moto. Let’s do this.
