Kinpo shows off 7-inch Android thin client tablet

June 7, 2009

First was the G1, and next came a slew of other cellphones. Now, we’ve got Android sashaying on over to netbooks, and just in case you’re not really looking for that, there’s Kinpo‘s 7-inch tablet. As the Google-sourced OS continues to show its versatility, the aforementioned company has thrown it onto a so-called thin client with a Freescale i.MX51 processor and WVGA display. From the video posted after the break, we’d say the system makes a good fit on this form factor, but feel free to hop on down and judge for yourself.

Leica debuts D-LUX 4 Safari special edition camera

June 7, 2009

Leica has never been one to shy away from special edition cameras, but we’re not about to start complaining, especially when they keep churning out packages that look like this. As Leica fans will no doubt notice, this one is just a regular D-LUX 4 camera, but with a new olive drab, safari-style appearance that has also graced Leica’s high-end M8.2 rangefinder. Of course, while this model is thousands of dollars cheaper than that camera, it is still a somewhat hefty $995 (stylish, water-resistant case included, naturally). Look for it to be available this August.

Nokia N900 revealed in Nseries presentation? (Update: probably not)

June 7, 2009

We’re not sure how we missed this, but it seems the Nokia N900 (aka “Rover”) was not only mentioned, but visually detailed in some candor during an Nseries presentation way back in October of last year. If you fast forward to about the three-minute mark in this video, Nokia’s next-gen, Maemo 5-powered internet tablet is seen doing its thing, and it differs in a few key details from the last leak — most noticeably, it’s got a big d-pad on the left just like its predecessor and there’s no sign of an earpiece for making calls over the rumored 3G radio. In fact, it really just looks like a whited-out N810, which makes us wonder whether this isn’t purely conceptual, especially considering the age of the video. Either way, the N810′s aging rapidly and the territory’s rapidly being encroached on by MIDs of all shapes and sizes, so we imagine we’ll see this get launched soon enough — maybe on T-Mobile USA of all carriers, if the rumors pan out. Follow the break for the full video.

[Thanks, CanisMinor]

Update: We’re being told that this was little more than a student-led art project — and it’s one hell of an art project, considering that it looks every bit as slick as Nokia’s official marketing. Thanks, Ryan A.!

Palm Touchstone torn asunder, cost to manufacturer estimated at $5 (update)

June 7, 2009

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/hardware/Palm_s_70_Touchstone_costs_just_5_to_manufacture’;

As much as we love those guys and gals over at Will It Blend?, we couldn’t help but cringe each time they “dissected” any given gadget. The cautious cats over at iFixit, however, are more our style. Gentle, loving, appreciative and respectful — what else could you want in a gizmo surgeon? Per usual, they’ve done whatever it takes to get ahold of Palm’s new Pre and Touchstone, but rather than basking in the glory of ownership, they promptly unrolled their tool belt, fired up the DSLR and proceeded to dissemble both units for your viewing pleasure. We already know that all those little innards add up to right around $170 (for the Pre, anyway), but there’s nothing quite like looking at each and every chip and bit yourself. Hit up the read links below if you find your interest piqued, and don’t forget to tip your hat as you exit.

Update: Through their official Twitter account, the iFixit folks have chimed in to say they’d be “shocked if it cost more than $5 to manufacture.” As always, that’s not the whole story and there’s probably a good number of other variables justifiably contributing to the cost, but knowing $70 is a bit of a turn-off for some customers, we can only hope that price drops sooner rather than later.

Xbox 360′s Games on Demand service gets demoed on video

June 7, 2009

Without a doubt, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Games on Demand unveil at E3 gave gamers plenty of reason to celebrate. Just think — no more camping out for midnight launches; you just fire up your console, make sure you’ve paid your internet bill and get to downloading. For those who just can’t wait to see what said experience will actually look like on Redmond’s console, the video just past the break does a commendable job of explaining. It looks as if the system logs your credit card information in order to make game purchases as easy as a few button presses, and games that are already on your HDD can be played while another downloads. It’s good stuff, we promise.

Freescale whips up netbook and smartbook design concepts, waits for someone to notice

June 7, 2009

Does the world really, truly need another netbook? How about even a single one of these so-called smartbooks? Freescale’s hoping the answer to both of those questions is “absolutely, yes,” as it took the opportunity at Computex to showcase a half-dozen netbook and smartbook design concepts. Granted, there’s better than a fair chance that all of the models you see below won’t ever leave the render stage, but if they do, they’ll obviously be based on one of Freescale’s chips. We can’t say we’re mesmerized by any of ‘em, but we’re curious if you feel any different — would you drop coin on any of these machines?

MSI’s X-Slim X320 now shipping in the US for $599

June 7, 2009

MSI’s X-Slim X340 has already made its way out into this brave, new world, but the version that checks in at a score less (for whatever reason) is just now starting to do the same. If you’re looking for the least expensive way to snag yourself an X-Slim, head on over to one of a few reputable e-tailers and part ways with $599. Depending on courier and location, you should be reveling in your decision within a few business days. Oh, if only everything else in this world was so easy.

Spintronics magic appears again, aims to vastly accelerate data storage and retrieval

June 7, 2009

As the list of “awesome things that won’t ever happen” grows ever longer, we’ve got a brilliant team of French physicists who have seemingly concocted a method for storing and retrieving data on hard discs that’s around 100,000 times faster than usual. Yes, 100,000x. The trick is based around spintronics, an almost mythical procedure that involves the use of lasers, magnetic sensors and mutant abilities to shuffle data around at a dizzying rate. This particular method, however, improves upon the comparatively sluggish attempts of the past, as it uses photons that “modify the state of the electrons’ magnetization on the storage surface.” In layman’s terms, this all means that the HDD you buy in 2098 will probably operate significantly faster than the one you picked up during Circuit City’s going-out-of-business sale. Got it? Good.

Swiveling ASUS Eee PC T91 does multitouch in Windows 7

June 7, 2009

Like so many other dodgy things in life, ASUS’ Eee PC T91 has been around the block a time or two. It wasn’t until this week, however, that ASUS finally came clean with a full specifications list for the swivel-screen netvertible. The 3G-equipped machine also packs a GPS module, Bluetooth, WiFi, an 8.9-inch LED-backlit touch panel, Intel’s Atom Z520 CPU, Ethernet, a multicard reader, VGA output, twin USB 2.0 sockets and audio in / out ports. Sadly, there’s still no definite US release date, but we suspect it can’t be too far off now. In related news, this very machine was caught showcasing its elite multitouch skills with Windows 7, and if you’re interested in seeing exactly how that went down, hop on past the break and mash play.
