T-Mobile UK apparently being pressured to merge or bust

May 1, 2009

There’s not exactly a ton of details on this one, but it looks like Deutsche Telekom CFO Timotheus Hoettges caused a bit of a stir at the company’s recently shareholder meeting, where he reportedly suggested that T-Mobile UK would likely have to merge with another carrier or face the possibility of going bust. Specifically, Hoettges said that “in our view consolidation is a means to take excess capabilities out of the market,” adding somewhat ominously that “nothing is unthinkable on our side.” Of course, that immediately brings up the question of which carrier T-Mobile might merge with, and MarketingWeek suggests that one of the most likely suitors would be 3, which it currently ranked fifth in the UK market right behind T-Mobile, although O2, Orange, and Vodafone would no doubt also be in the running.

Mute Mic is the perfect addition to your next antisocial karaoke event

May 1, 2009

You know how your voice always sounds better in your own head than it does on tape? Apparently, someone in Japan agrees with you. To that end, they’ve put together a little microphone with a silencer — so the next time you come home at 3 am, all hopped up on Sake and intent on generating a sorrowful wail alongside the backing track of what was once a hit for the Carpenters, make sure you’re packing the Mute Mic. This bad boy is designed to muzzle your song-hole, ensuring that whatever sound you do generate remains restricted to you and your Wii. Your neighbors will thank you, and the estate of Karen Carpenter will thank you. Already a karaoke star? Show us your skills after the break.

Samsung Alias 2 launching on May 11, E Ink confirmed?

May 1, 2009

We’re hearing that the Alias 2 is on track for a release in less than two weeks from now — May 11, to be exact — which would mean that we’re just a few short days away from seeing the very first E Ink handset launch in the States. Yes, that’s right, we said it — after all the heated debate over the technology powering the Alias 2′s configurable keypad, our tipster tells us that new information floating down from corporate confirms that the device is using E Ink, which would explain why it’s able to maintain state even with the power off. We still think it’s one awfully ugly phone, but this might be one of those all-too-frequent cases where cool tech ends up winning our hearts anyway. As for pricing, the tipster thinks it may come in at $79, which seems improbable even with deep contract discounting and a big mail-in rebate — but if by some miracle it does end up being accurate, they’re going to be selling tons of these to text-heavy geeks like ourselves.

Canon gets all ‘Steve Zissou’ with its Mixed Reality Aquarium

May 1, 2009

In some ways, augmented reality is an elegant solution to the main problem with VR: while there are some areas where insane levels of immersion are required, this stuff ain’t cheap — relegating solutions like CirculaFloor to academics, the military, and the extremely well-heeled. But how about those who just want to see wild graphics while they, you know, “party?” Canon’s Mixed Reality Aquarium headset transforms any area you inhabit into a giant fishbowl. Not the sort of thing that you’ll want to do more than once, probably — although, to the company’s credit, this is more of a research project than an actual product. How about an option to swim with Daryl Hannah from Splash? That would be pure gadget gold. That said, this does make for a fun video — which we’ve graciously provided for you, after the break.

Acer’s 11.6-inch Aspire One gets a spec list, release date

May 1, 2009

We’ve already gotten a good look at Acer’s new 11.6-inch Aspire One netbook, and even gotten word of some of the specs, but it looks like Acer has now removed any last bit of mystery on its German website, where it has finally let loose a complete spec list. Now officially dubbed the Aspire One 751, the netbook packs an Atom Z520 processor (as opposed to the Z530 that was initially rumored), along with up to 2GB of RAM, built-in Bluetooth, your choice of three or six-cell batteries, optional 3G, and a 1366×768 resolution on that 11.6-inch display — not to mention your choice of XP or Vista. Still no official word on a release ’round here, unfortunately, but it looks like it’ll be hitting at least some parts of Europe later this month for just over $500.

HTC Snap reviewed: QWERTY keyboard, Winmo 6.1, no great shakes

May 1, 2009

We know you’ve been dying to get your hands all over the HTC Snap… oh, wait. You haven’t? Well, neither have we — but no matter, ‘cos Smartphone Daily has a review, and they’ve filled us in on the luscious deets. For the uninitiated, this is a 2.4-inch, Windows Mobile 6.1, touchscreen deficient candybar, and something of a BlackBerry doppelganger (if only in the looks department), featuring WiFi and a camera. Wild, huh? Overall, the reviewer found it to be “decent” — if you’re looking for a “business device,” that is. The Inner Circle feature was singled out for some praise: little more than an Inbox filter for your, erm, “inner circle,” you have to wonder why a manufacturer hadn’t thought of it before. On the downside, he did find the inclusion of a TAB key (where the A key belongs) to be particularly annoying. This bad boy will go on sale this summer in Europe, at which time the S522 (as it’s known ’round here) should hit the shops Stateside. One more pic after the break.

Xbox 360 to get motion-sensing add-on with full body game control?

May 1, 2009

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/xbox/Xbox_360_motion_sensing_add_on_in_the_flesh’; Here’s a wild one. We just got a tip from someone who purports to be in the know on Microsoft’s efforts to beat the Wii at its own motion-sensing game, with some of the details lining up with what we were hearing last year along these lines. The word is that Microsoft is building a “sensor bar” of sorts, but instead of detecting the waggles of Wiimote-like controllers, it detects full body movement and sound, sans controllers. There are two sensors on the bar, along with a mic and a camera, and while our tipster has “no idea” how it actually works, it sounds pretty impressive. Here’s a quick rundown of capabilities mentioned:

  • Full body and hand gesture control of games / characters.
  • In fighting games you kick, punch, duck, dive, jump and so forth with your body.
  • It also picks up small hand gestures like pinching, grabbing and scrolling.
  • There will also be video conferencing and games with video.
  • Trivia game over the internet with live images of each person playing. When a question pops up, they can clap to buzz in.
  • You can “move objects on your screen” and the other party can see what you’re doing in real time.
  • Sensor detects only the person playing, not folks observing on the couch.

We’re rather curious as to what those two mystery sensors on the bar are doing, since there’s specific mention of a lack of controllers. Perhaps they add depth perception to whatever the camera is picking up on video, but we guess we’ll have to wait and find out. Of course, this could all be an elaborate hoax, but for what it’s worth the picture appears undoctored, and the story is plausible. Either way, it’s only natural for Microsoft to be looking to duplicate — and expand upon — the wild success Nintendo has enjoyed with motion-controlled gaming. And if they don’t, Sony sure will.

Engadget’s delightful cruise on the Ultra Motor A2B electric bike (with video!)

May 1, 2009

After the death-defying moments astride the Zero S, and the claustrophobia experienced within GM and Segway’s P.U.M.A., we were ready for something a little more relaxing in the electric vehicle space: and Ultra Motor’s A2B electric bike provided. Not to say it doesn’t have any pep — we took it for a test ride around SoHo, and found plenty of juice to power past those other suckers doing their own pedaling — but there’s something a tad more gentle to this bike than some of the other rough-around-the-edges EVs we’ve bumped into lately. The best news is that the A2B is available now at various dealerships, with an almost-palatable price tag of $2,600, 20 mile range and 20 mph max electric-assisted speed (limited due to regulations on bikes). Testing it out we found ourselves pedaling just a bit out of habit, and on the short city blocks we rarely got it past third gear, but there’s plenty of power for urban transport. The front and rear shocks provide a well-cushioned ride (and are bouncy enough for some easy wheelies), the small wheels keep the center of gravity low and maneuverability high, and the brakes are excellent. Catch the magic on video after the break.

Motorola intros i465 Clutch, company’s first QWERTY iDEN device

May 1, 2009

Following the seemingly unstoppable trend toward QWERTY and heavy texting in the low end of the market, Motorola has announced its very first iDEN device to ever feature a full keyboard. The rumored i465 looks just a little better in glamorous press shots than it did before, and it’s picked up a name along the way — Clutch. Naturally, Boost Mobile is a perfect fit for the thing, and the Sprint division looks to be launching this quarter. Specs include Bluetooth 1.2, a 160 x 128 display, video capture via a VGA cam (hey, it’s low-end, what did you expect?), and mil-spec compliance for shock, vibration, and all that good stuff that you might need when your phone hits the pavement. Pricing will be announced closer to launch, but we don’t expect it to break the bank.
