Dior Is Trying to Make Ugly Futuristic Glasses Actually Happen [Fashion]

February 25, 2009

I thought we learned our lesson from cheesy sci-fi movies. You know how everyone in the fictional future is walking around with clunky, stupid glasses? Now a designer wishes to birth that digital dystopia.

From Dior, the Blow glasses are a fluorescently fugly take on the future of fashion, debuting in a limited batch of 500 this April. No, they don’t contain any special video hud or miniature computer, but no one else needs to know that as you threaten to retaliate to their name calling with mechanically-focused psionic blasts. galleryPost(‘viewongeekdior’, 4, ‘ ‘); [Viewon via StyleCrave]

Metal Skull Table Lamp Is Beyond Creepy [Lighting]

February 25, 2009

Well, this is the most terrifying table lamp I’ve ever seen. Why anybody would want to stare at this thing every time they sit on the couch is beyond me.

The lamp’s name is Frankie, and it’s shaped like a skull with some sort of horrifying modification over where the mouth should be. The eyes are interchangeable LED or halogen bulbs, allowing you to choose just how intense the stare from this thing is gonna be. The whole thing weighs 11 pounds, and is probably expensive due to the fact that you need to contact the artist for pricing. No thank you. [Fernando Akasaka via CoolHunting]

PSP 2 Coming In Time for Holiday ’09? [Unconfirmed]

February 25, 2009

Kotaku just talked to Acclaim’s David Perry, the guy who allegedly spilled the beans on the upcoming PSP 2 earlier today. And he’s pretty sure about a launch date.

I spoke to a developer who is working on [the PSP 2] right now. I know this developer is already working on it, so that means they have a prototype. That would sound like a fall release to me.

Perry may be loosely projecting a date according to the bit of information he has, but it seems to us that whether it’s specifically a fall or winter 2009 release that Sony is aiming for, the PSP 2 is likely being prepped for contention in the next holiday season. [Kotaku and Image]

Best Buy Mails Tiny Photo Paper in Massive Box [Shipping Hall Of Shame]

February 25, 2009

How much packaging is necessary to ship a small package of 4″x6″ photo paper, Best Buy?

Let’s put it this way. If our reader had ordered two packs of photo paper, the world’s rainforests would be but a pile of sawdust, plus enough air would be trapped within plastic polyair bubbles to make a simple walk around the block into a death-defying Everest summit.

Instead, the Earth chooses to kill us slowly, having deemed the prospect of a swift, global-scale execution too painless. [Thanks Jeromy!]

UPDATE from the tipster: “I ordered a printer from Bestbuy, and the paper came free with the order. I do not make it a practice to buy paper in small quantities online, as it is generally not cost effective, but when it was free, I thought “what the hell.”

Apple Seeeecret Shareholders Meeting’s Best Moment [Apple]

February 25, 2009

Fortune’s Apple 2.0 has posted what allegedly happened in today’s Apple shareholder meeting—where the press wasn’t allowed to have any device to liveblog the event—including the best moment:

Next person is complimenting company for beautiful products. Wishes Steve well. Singing happy birthday to Steve… EVERYONE singing.

That happened after someone said that the people asking for universal health care for employees are “socialists.” Funny, because the last time I heard people singing “happy birthday” to their leader in a shareholders meeting was in the Soviet Parlament—I think the leader was Stalin back then.

Not much else was discussed. Some people asked for Steve’s health—”no comment” was the answer—and others asked why there wasn’t more diversity in the executive team—damn socialists.

Tim Cook insisted on why they got out of MacWorld, arguing that Apple’s retail presence “blows MacWorld out of the water.” [Apple 2.0]

Don’t Be Alarmed: NYC Sprint Ads Featuring Gizmodo Are Not Sign of a Corporate Takeover [Ads]

February 25, 2009

One day, Sprint asked us if they could quote us from our big multi-city 3G performance test, and I said, “hmmokay.” To my surprise, the ads are kind of everywhere in NYC.

The big papers, the airports, even Times Square. First off, I want to let you, the beautiful readers, know there was no pay involved for the quote. And that’s that. But I’m also not going to pretend that I’m not a little surprised that our test is referred here as the authoritative piece on 3G data testing in the US. Never thought I’d see the day where Giz was mentioned so prominently on a big ad, since we’re not always known for playing by the rules or playing well with industry. I guess we get to eat our cake and have it, too, in this case.

More than just surprised, I think my Gawker overlords are pleased we haven’t burned all the bridges in all the gadget world. And so they’re offering a $300 JetBlue gift certificate for the best glossy photo of the ad in public. (Send here, contest rules here.) Please, leave your nude self out of the photos. Unless you are very attractive.

Jacket With an Inflatable Hood Is Perfect For Sleepy Travelers [Clothing]

February 25, 2009

Sleeping on a train, plane or car would be a hell of a lot more comfortable if your jacket had a hood that could inflate and function as a pillow.

galleryPost(‘rollingstonejacket’, 3, ”);

The jacket, confusingly dubbed “Never Stop a Rolling Stone” by designer Rahel Ritchie features a fully inflatable hood that can be manually adjusted via a mouthpiece tucked away in the fabric. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that this concept is available for sale. However, the snowboarding experts at Burton have had a similar product on the market for a while now. The latter is actually a hoodie and it doesn’t feature a fully inflatable hood—but it does have a built in eye mask and earplugs for lullaby listening. [Rahel Ritchie via Likecool]
